La démence est la perte de fonctions intellectuelles comme réfléchir, se souvenir, et raisonner, nuisant au fonctionnement des gens dans leur quotidien. Ce n'est pas une maladie en soi mais plutôt un groupe de symptômes entraînés par certaines maladies et états de santé. Les types de démence les mieux connus sont la démence qui accompagne l'Alzheimer ainsi que la démence vasculaire, la démence frontotemporale, et la démence à corps de Lewy. Toutes ces formes de démence composent le nouveau groupe clinique appelé les « troubles neurocognitifs ».
Or, les services de soutien, d'information, et de répit à l'intention des proches aidants sont essentiels si l'on veut assurer les meilleurs soins qui soient aux personnes aux prises avec la démence.
