Offers support, education and counselling for vulnerable parents (young, living in low income, isolated, newcomers) of children 0 to 5 years of age, living in Region of Peel.
One-to-one Counselling: offers emotional support and case management to help parents reach self-identified goals. The community counsellors will help parents to improve their physical and mental health and connect with community and necessary resources.
Provides help with:
- Emotional support and case management
- Pre/postnatal education and information
- Advocacy for housing, financial support, etc
- Developing safety plans for those in abusive relationships
- Finding suitable housing, baby items, referrals
Growing As Parents
A 10-week life and parenting skills program offered at various locations across Peel Region and/or virtually. Some of the topics covered are: healthy relationships, positive communication, coping as a single parent, anger management, etc. Please note that childminding is available and light snacks are provided for in-person groups.
Supper Connection
A weekly program that focuses on parenting and life skills programming in conjunction with healthy nutrition and food security information sharing. Groups are offered in the community and virtually. Nobody’s Perfect was developed by Public Health Canada over 30 years ago to promote positive parenting and is particularly suited for our client population: designed to meet the needs of parents who are young, single, socially or geographically isolated, or who have low income or limited formal education. Me, My Baby, Our Connection
A combination of a program called Me, My Baby, Our World, developed by Rosalie Hall in Toronto to promote positive attachment for young mothers by helping to increase parental confidence and sensitive responses to their children leading to improved infant mental health outcomes, and Make the Connection program developed by psychologists and adapted by Strong Minds Strong Kids, Psychology Canada focused on showing strategies to help parents to create and maintain a secure attachment relationship. Volunteer Opportunities: There are opportunities on the board of directors and board committees, positions to help with the planning and execution of events as well as chances to assist in the everyday operations of Vita Centre (childminding, general administration, delivery of items to clients). Care Closet: Once you are committed to counselling or group programs and attend a minimum of 3 sessions, you can gain access to our Care Closet. All inventory is donated by the community and therefore, we cannot confirm availability of all items at all times.
Here are some supplies you can access to properly care for your infant:
- formula and bottles, baby food
- diapers and wipes
- baby and kids clothing
- gently-used baby furniture such as cribs and strollers
