The goal of Public Health inspections is to reduce risk of illness and infection
Inspection of food establishments, personal service providers (e.g., hair salons and tattoo studios) and public pools is conducted to ensure they are providing safe services to consumers. Also inspect regulated health professionals (e.g., doctors, dentists, chiropractors)only when a complaint is received from the public
however it is not authorized to routinely inspect places where regulated health professionals operate
Inspection results make public:
- The results of inspections for food service providers and personal service settings
- Any tickets, orders and closures issue
- Complaints against personal services settings, regulated health professionals, child care programs, retirement/long-term care homes, schools and other premises where a lapse in infection prevention or control is noted
- Tobacco retailers ticketed for selling tobacco products to minors

Inspection results for the following types of businesses are available on CheckBeforeYouChoose.ca- Restaurants and food carts
- Institutions that serve food (e.g., childcare centres, long-term care facilities
- Grocery stores and convenience stores that serve food
- Catering companies
- Salons and spas
- Tattoo and piercing studios
- Esthetics providers (e.g., tanning salons)
- Places that offer manicures/pedicures
